Kansas Association of Wheat Growers
January 2 Dan Maltby Marketing Newsletter
Hello Kansas Wheat. Happy New Year. I hope your 2018 is prosperous (and safe).
Much of the USA is currently in The Freezer, with minus double-digit wind chills. Global warming is taking the night off.
Markets have thought about maybe trying to rally the past couple of weeks, but without any real enthusiasm. “Winter kill” talk is mainly…just talk. It’s almost impossible to kill winter wheat in late December-early January, although I’m sure some plants won’t make it. The temps up in Montana have been ridiculous.
But…the Big Elephant in the room is continued dryness. You and I know that winter wheat doesn’t need much water yet, even though it would be welcomed. The way I keep score is the clock starts ticking on St. Patty’s Day. By then, wheat needs a drink.
