Export Opportunity Exists for Hard White Wheat

Kansas wheat farmers have a unique opportunity to export wheat into African and Asian markets. Unfortunately for Australian wheat farmers, their crop has been plagued by drought and freeze. They won’t be able to meet the export demand for the white wheat they grow. This gives Kansas wheat farmers the chance to meet this international demand. Planting decisions made now will affect the supply that is available over the next year, while Australia’s exports lag.

UK Wheat Crop Below Five-Year Average at 14.1M Tonnes, Says Defra

The 2018 UK wheat crop is down 5.1% on last year, while barley production fell by 7.9%, according to provisional Defra figures. It is estimated that the total wheat crop is just under 14.1m tonnes, below the five-year average for 2013-2017 of 14.8m tonnes. The total barley crop is forecast to be 6.6m tonnes, again below the five-year average of 7m tonnes.

More Wheat Acres Yield Average Harvest

Despite a 19 percent increase in harvested acres, Illinois wheat farmers harvested an average per bushel crop this year, ending up a tad over last year’s production total. An estimated 560,000 acres produced 36.96 million bushels, up 3 percent over 35.72 million bushels in 2017, with a 66 bushel per acre average, reported Illinois State Statistician Mark Schleusener for the National Agricultural Statistics Service. The 66 bushels per acre were down 10 bushels from 76 in 2017, Schleusener’s report noted.

The USDA Agricultural Research Service wants to level up wheat, making it more nutritious.Getting a proper meal today might seem as easy as popping into the nearest diner, but appearances can be deceiving. Our diets, while gaining in calories, are also steadily losing in the nutrient department — for example, about 60% of the world’s population doesn’t get enough iron in their diet, says Robert Graybosch of the Agricultural Research Service. However, a new paper that he and his team published aims to solve this problem by packing wheat with more nutrients, especially minerals, through biofortification.

National Wheat Foundation Now Accepting Scholarship Applications

The National Wheat Foundation has begun accepting applications for the Jerry Minore Scholarship, honoring a student pursuing a career in agriculture. The scholarship is available to both high school and college students for the 2019-2020 academic year with an application deadline of Dec. 1. “The purpose of the Jerry Minore Scholarship is to help students who are passionate about agriculture at school and at home,” said Wayne Hurst, chairman of the National Wheat Foundation. “Our students are the future. They will go on to educate the next generation about wheat, agriculture, and their role in society.”
