North Dakota State University released their 17th Crop and Pest report on Sept. 8, highlighting important issues affecting everyone across the region.
As anyone in the agriculture industry is painfully aware, 2022 has seen a historic rise in the cost of fertilizer costs, as well as higher grain prices. Therefore, the North Dakota corn, sunflower, spring wheat/durum fertilizer publications and N-calculator have been updated to include higher grain prices and N costs to avoid performing extra math. Links for these updates can be found on page four of the report.
The report touches on NDSU’s soil health field day, concentrating on cover crops. The event took place on Sept. 20, focusing on cover crop options, establishing alfalfa in an intercrop system and how cover crops can be used in local farming systems and prove beneficial to soil health.
Other topics included the annual home invasion of insects as the weather cools and how to prevent and combat those pests, taking care of the soil and corn stalk integrity.
